Iron Deficiency

It has been noted that over 90% of women do not get enough iron. A deficiency can lead to a condition known as anaemia which can leave you feeling tired for most of the day.

Iron is needed to form haemoglobin in the red blood cells, which transport oxygen around the body. A daily intake of iron (14mg for adults) is essential.

What do I do?

Eat iron rich foods such as red meets, poultry and oily fish, green leafy vegetables, dried fruit and wholegrains. Steaming rather than slow cooking helps to retain the iron. Teas and coffees can inhibit iron absorption, so wait at least 30 mins after eating before drinking. If you lead a hectic lifestyle you may need to supplement.
